Truing a Superabrasive Wheel on a Centerless Grinding Machine

To ensure satisfactory work when using a grinding machine, it is important to not only true but also dress the grinding wheel. These two processes should be carried out every time the grinding wheel is mounted on the machine. While super-abrasive wheels are known to be versatile, they make for significant investment. This is why you should ensure that they result in higher productivity so that you can repay the money you put in. Experts recommend that you pay special attention to trueing and make sure that it is done regularly.

Grinding wheel

Regardless of how well a grinding wheel is manufactured, there is bound to be a deviation from the circular shape once it is mounted. Even when the eccentricity is small, it will affect the quality of the final workpiece. If you are to produce quality work at all times, the grinding wheel will need to be trued. One of the best ways of finding high spots is by bringing child’s crayon to touch a spinning wheel. These spots will draw color from the crayon.

Truing super-abrasive wheels

Truing conventional grinding wheels can easily be done using a diamond cutter. This is because the cutter is harder than the wheel matrix. When it comes to diamond and CBN grinding wheels, the situation is a bit different. Since the wheels cannot be cut, you will have to grind them to size. The best way to achieve this is to us a brake-controlled truing device. Although the device turns slowly, it presents an abrasive surface that delivers a controllable and precise truing operation.

Dressing the wheels

Once the truing operation has produced a smooth surface, dressing will be necessary to sharpen the wheel. This is why dressing should be done after truing.

Most super-abrasive wheels are self-sharpening, although the workpiece material will normally work to dull the surface.
